"Doctor Gang repaired my mitral valve the end February 2024 and I am very pleased. He has a lot of energy and can be funny at times and his team was always attentive and got back to me if I had any questions or concerns. Doctor Gang and team were very conscientious about following up on the fluid by my lung with X-rays and visits and a procedure to drain the fluid once.

Dr. Gang patiently educated my spouse and I about my heart defect - explaining in detail (using doppler, MRA images, and even hand drawn pictures) what needed to be fixed – all in non-technical terms that we could understand. "Words have escaped me to describe how wonderful Dr. Gang is. He was highly recommended by my cardiologist, my PCP, and my brother. He is described as an artist with valves and he truly demonstrated his skill.

I had severe regurgitation at the mitral valve, caused by MAC. It was very challenging surgery, but using all his skills, Dr. Gang removed the large embedded calcium deposit that was holding the valve open like a "tent pole", saved/repaired the valve, and stopped the leakage. 10 weeks post-op I'm walking 3.5 miles 3 to 4 days a week, participating in cardiac rehab classes 2 days a week, and feeling great. "Dr. Gang really helped me understand the severity of my mitral valve regurgitation, taking the time to share the TEE imagery. He shared his perspective on surgical repair solutions once the cardiac team determined that drug therapy was not a good long-term solution.

I personally researched robotic heart valve surgery as an alternative including a helpful second opinion from Mayo Clinic. I chose to stay local with a cardiac team I learned to trust and only received outstanding care from ER at Delnor to ICU/step down units at CDN. Dr. Gang communicated directly and clearly. He updated my family after surgery and they had positive comments about him and his communication with them.

I know I made the best decision to have Dr. Gang and his team (with cardiologist, Dr. Karmali, who made the initial diagnosis) for my short and long-term care. My recovery was quick with relatively little pain with some discomfort and fatigue which was predicted by cardiac team.) Ask questions! Do your research! "I am a 57 year old woman who has lived a healthy and productive life. I was a social worker for 30 years working for the same company. After experiencing health problems, which I did not understand, I decided to retire early due to dizzy spells, breathing problems upon exertion, cognitive issues and complete exhaustion. I had occasional heart pain and I felt exhausted at all times. I was not functioning as I had in the past so I went to the doctor to see my GP, Dr. John Vaikutis. He checked my heart and told me that I had a murmur in my heart. He asked that I go get an echocardiogram which was very non-invasive. The results were not good and I am sure my heart problems kept me from functioning in the way I usually performed.

Once the test results were examined, Dr. Vaikutis called Dr. Gyu Gang, a cardiac surgeon. Dr. Gang got me in the office within a couple of days and talked about my condition. I met with Dr. Gang and he told me that I would need to have a new aortic valve placed in my heart and that this would entail open heart surgery. He also explained that I had a bicuspid aortic valve which was a birth defect and this blew out my aortic valve. Dr. Gang was straightforward, compassionate and spent ample time explaining my current situation. Open heart surgery was certainly not on my mind but I felt confident that Dr. Gang would take good care of me.

It would be unfair of me not to take the time to discuss Dr. Gang's team. He had 4 Physician assistants, many great nurses and other doctors watching over me while I was in the hospital. I had this uncanny feeling that all team members were in tune with each other which helped my recovery.

There are a couple of suggestions I would have for anyone going through heart surgery. Do not over pack your bag as I did. I do not think I got out of my gown for days. Keep up on pain control and talk with your doctor about their expectations about pain control. It hurt badly. Report to doctor appointments in leopard skin pajamas, LOL.

The last thing I will state is that my family member was going to fly me to Cleveland Clinic to get this surgery. After meeting Dr. Gang and his team and actually going through the experience of heart surgery I would always rather be at home than in some hospital where I do not know a soul. I am sure Cleveland Clinic is a good hospital but I got the best care at Central DuPage Hospital in my own town."

"Dr. Gang was fantastic!

In the beginning he was direct and serious. This is what I needed. My condition was worse than what I was aware of. My 5-hour surgery took 12 1/2 hours. My care and recovery was fantastic. Everyone was great. I was out of bed walking by the next day.

My spirits got a little low, after a few days. My wife told Dr Gang what I said. Dr. Gang expressed how well I was doing. That he was very pleased with my recovery, and I was doing better than younger patients with less surgery. He made me feel proud of myself. From that point he’d come in my room with a big smile, talking about how well I looked, the color in my face. He made me look forward to seeing him. In addition, other doctors would come in to see me, and tell me how fortunate I was to have Dr Gang.

One doctor said Dr. Gang was one of the best surgeons in the country. I responded that I didn’t know that, but I knew he was very very good. The doctor asked how I knew that? I said, Dr Gang told me! The doctor smiled and said he loves it when he does that. For me, that was very reassuring. Plus he was funny the way he told me. I believe a patient wants a confident doctor. It certainly reassured me!

Dr. Gang mixes seriousness with compassion and humor. Mix that with truly talented surgical abilities. Combine that with a fantastic staff that follows his lead, and brings their own abilities and personalities to the table. Combine nursing and a great hospital with good people and very good food, you’re all set.

I had NO chest pain, except when sneezing and coughing. I had some pain in my leg, that was used to retrieve veins for my 3 bypass’s. This was minor, and went away relatively quick.

"After researching all the thoracic surgeons and hospitals in the area, my family and I felt confident with the team of Dr. Gang and Dr. Tomasko at Central Dupage Hospital in Winfield.
