Dr. Doolabh at UT Southwestern Medical center just repaired my Mitral Valve on Tuesday 4/23/24 and I was home on Thursday 4/25/24! My surgery was 1.5hrs long. He was able to repair it rather than replace it. Which I was extremely happy about. The only painful part was waking up with the a heat drainage tube after surgery! Very painful. Really sucked. But I did so well they took it out on Wednesday afternoon! That was a huge relief. I was in my own home by 2pm Thursday! Dr. Doolabh and his staff are top notch and we can’t say enough good things about them! scott Thomasson

I’m having minimally invasive Mitral Valve Repair 4/23/24. Surgery will be performed by Dr Neelan Doolabh @ UT Southwestern in Dallas,Tx. He’s pretty confident he’ll be able to sow it back together but won’t know for sure until he gets in there. But if he can’t then they will have to replace valve with Mechanical Valve or a pigs valve. The mechanical one is out for me. Don’t want to take blood thinners the rest of my life. I’ve decided that if has to be replaced I wanna go with pigs valve. My question which I didn’t ask during my visit with the doctor is this: IS it possible that my body could reject pigs valve? If so would I have to take medication the rest of my life to avoid rejection?
Thanks,
Scott Thomasson
Scott Thomasson Disregard previous question. I just found information. Your body will not reject pigs valve.

Erin Barker We have the same surgeon! My surgery is in June. I am also worried about blood thinners, and ticking from mechanical valves, but I am not sure I want to have a second surgery to replace the bioprosthetic. Best wishes for your surgery!

Rebecca J Just came out of MV repair. Had to make that same decision. There is new, standard recommendation for MV replacement (tissue vs mechanical) on quality and length of life - they only recommend tissue valve for those of over 70. It’s a different recommendation for MV than Artial. Talk to your doctor about the new standard (March 2024).
Sounds like your doctor is confident you're getting in soon enough for repair. I was also asymptomatic and came out with a successful repair via mini-sternotomy. I think your chances of post-op a-fib are greater than replacement (which is often resolved). You're in good health. Sending prayers for an uncomplicated surgery. They really know how to do this one. You got this.
